A Story of Hope and Healing: Atticus’ Journey

In a heart-breaking act of cruelty, Atticus, a five-year-old Staghound, was found abandoned and starved on a hard waste pile in Melbourne's west.

Weighing just 12 kilos—less than half of his recommended weight—Atticus was on the brink of death when he was brought to The Lost Dogs’ Home. Unable to even lift his head, he was immediately rushed to our vet hospital for lifesaving emergency treatment.

Dr. Jess Wilde, our Director of Veterinary Services, described the scene as heart-wrenching: "His emaciated body, shallow breathing, and weakened state brought many of our staff to tears. Every rib was visible; his fight for survival was palpable."

Atticus's journey to recovery was an uphill battle. With extensive veterinary care and the unwavering support of compassionate people like you, Atticus fought through his darkest days, and we are overjoyed to share a heart-warming update.

Update: Atticus’s New Beginning

14 August, 2024: We are absolutely delighted to announce that Atticus has found his forever home! He has been welcomed with open arms by his new parents, Susan and Paul, and is now living his best life in picturesque Gippsland.

Just two months ago, Australia stood together, watching over this brave boy with hope in our hearts, praying that he would pull through after the horrific ordeal he endured. Not only did Atticus survive, but he did so with a strength and determination that inspired everyone around him.

Today, Atticus is a healthy, happy boy who will continue to inspire us all for many years to come. From all of us at The Lost Dogs’ Home, we wish Atticus and his new family a lifetime filled with love, happiness, and joy.

Why Your Support Matters

While Atticus’s story has a happy ending, many more animals are still fighting for their second chance. Atticus’s medical needs were extensive and costly, requiring expert equipment, skilled veterinary staff, surgical supplies, and post-operative care. These expenses add up quickly, and without ongoing government funding, we rely solely on the generosity of supporters like you.

Your donation today ensures that we can continue to provide critical care to animals like Atticus—giving them the best chance at a happy, healthy life in a loving forever home.

No animal deserves to go through what Atticus has. The Home is committed to doing everything possible to give every animal in our care the same chance at a joyful future. But we can’t do it without you.

Please donate today and be the lifeline that helps animals like Atticus heal and thrive.

"No animal deserves to go through what Atticus has. There is simply no excuse for any sort of cruelty towards animals and this is one of the most devastating cases we have seen.’’
